Zimmerman pine moth (ZPM) injury causes dieback on pines. Scotch pines vary in their susceptibility to ZPM. Christmas tree growers who sell cut trees are still able to sell infested trees whose injury had not yet killed and browned branches.
ZPM caterpillars winter as first stage larva and bore into trunk at the whorls in the spring. Feeding continues till mid July.   For more on control, please review E-40 Zimmerman Pine Moth
