Injury to the outside surface causes the damage.

Twig pruner injury.

Girdled twigs caused by twig girdler. Adult lays eggs in part of twig distal to cut. Twig falls and larva completes development. Adults emerge next summer.

Twig pruners are often flat-headed borers whose larvae tunnel in twig . Injury beneath the surface caused the damage.
    Pales or northern pine weevil feeding on twig surface causes twig dieback.
