Incomplete Metamorphosis

Insects in theis general group have incomplete metamorphosis. The immatures lack a worm-like immature stage.

Honeylocust plant hopper (right).

Note that Potato Leaf Hopper bears a superficial resemblance to the honeylocust plant hopper.

POTATO LEAF HOPPER curling red maple. These leafhoppers winter in tropical areas, migrating north on the spring winds. They land in young hay fields and meadows, multiplying until fields are mowed. At this time hoppers migrate from drying hay to uninfested succulent plant leaves. These trees have been severely injured by honeylocust plant bugs. Note how most leaves were severely stunted or killed. Just a few leaves were able to emerge.
Inspection for hoppers on leaves can improve management of plant. The upper shoot of this branch was treated with insecticide whenever hoppers were found. The middle branch was treated when 3 hoppers were found in the 6 terminal leaves of each branch. The bottom branch was not treated. This branch was collected from a tree that was sprayed after 1 plant bug was found per compound leaf. Use this threshold to maintain plant appearance and reduce unneccessary sprays that can cause later season spider mite outbreaks.
